RMIM meet report- New Jersey (1999) - part 1

This is Part 1 of the RMIMeet held at NewJersey on July 16-17. This being my first meet I have decided not to transcend the limits of decency and at the same time capture the spirit of the RMIM(trenscend the limits of decency).

Purvi, Chetan, Mr. and Mrs.Vinchhi Zindabad. I felt very much at home thanks to their hospitality. Infact I was home sick after leaving New Jersey. Within a couple of days after the meet
Chetan scanned the meet photos and sent them. This put me on overdrive and prompted me to jump into fray and write the report.

Pehle aap pehle aap ka maahool chaya hua tha but this time I happened to be the driver. Before writing the actual report I would like to express my feelings after the meet, and give an account of the premeet hungama.
 Huzoor Hariharan Haazir ho.
I hope Ramesh Hariharan doesn't run away from RMIM after reading my TERM PAPER.
The reason being "Apni to har aah ek toofan hai".

RMIMeet is an Oasis in a desert where I met a rare group of people who patronize vintage music.
Sanjeev and Armeen Ramabhadran inspired me with their singing and the spontaneous outburst of emotions took the shape of this poem.

They came they conquered they left
Leaving behind thoughts to reflect
And fond memories that were rife
Giving company to my deserted life
This cast a magic spell
And forced me into a shell
Till my mind and body came to rest
Soon began an eternal quest
For yet another oasis
An escape from my nemesis.
Srinivas Ganti(Hyderabadi).

Owing to God's grace I found the Oasis pretty soon. In fact two of them them one in NewJersey and one in the Bay Area.
Tum Jo milgaye ho to ye lagta hai ke jahaan milgaya hai
Ek bhatke hue raahi ko caarvaan milgaya hai.

Before anybody gets a doubt if this is a poetry forum I welcome poetry lovers to email me seperately.
Bandwidth ka barbaadi bund(stop) karneke liye.

So much for my feelings I already sense your feelings. Those who did not attend any meets must be jealous and others who did attend earlier meets must be wondering about the specialty of this one.
Sorry folks I pity you. To rub salt on your wounds, the fortunate few who did come must be
reliving those happy moments and cherishing the memories.
As promised here's the premeet hungama. It all started on Monday,July 12 when Chetan sent a mail indicating driving directions for the meet. The reply to this was a suggestion that "The Sonu Nigam Show" on Saturday would serve as a perfect finale and this snowballed into a chain of unprecedented proportions. The chain ended with this mail."If you or anyone else is interested in programming /designing position in the financial industry, then please send me your resume".(Owing to a
grave security threat I chose not to make the names of the people public). So u can guess that we were subject to an entire gamut of issues. This chain emailing reached its peak on Tuesday when we got 60
emails within 2 hours. Needless to say it served as an ideal warm up act
and geared me for the Mahabharat.

So I was ecstatic as Friday approached and there was no doubt in my mind that this ocassion would inspire me and the result would be poetry. Unfortunately I underestimated the proportions of the
impact. By the time I and Arun Sampath reached Chetans house Anil Hingorani, Sanjeev and Armeen Ramabhadran and Ashwini Deshpande had already set the house on fire.So I called 911 and the fire engines promptly arrived but it was of no avial. It needed Talat's voice and the song "shaam-e-gam ki kasam aaj gamgeen hain hum" to extinguish the fire.Though my stomach was full of rats my mind was full of songs. So I wasn't able to notice what I was eating.I was trying to get expert
opinion on whether Roshan was less talented than SDB and MadanMohan as proclaimed by an interview that says "Bahut Diya denewale ne tujhako magar aanchal he na samayii to kya kijiye" concluding that Roshan did not do Justice to his potential. This is certainly a travesty of the
truth. The HMV gimmick of not releasing Raagrang and Naubahaar until recently and Vividh Bharatis step motherly treatement of Roshans 50's gems gave credibility to the biased view. The discussion was abruptly ended as the person I was looking forward to graced the ocassion.Enter
"The Burman Fan(atic)"(No prizes for guessing.Scroll down at the bottom for the answer.)Ashok Dhareshwar,Satish and Saroj Kalra, Ajay Divekar and his wife, Surajit Bose, Hemlata Khemani, Moloi Banerjee(from bangalore), VeenaNayak were the next arrivals. We were waiting for Nita Awatramani. Her enthusiasm should be appreciated as she came from LA inspite of
being pregnant. It was already 1.00 am or should I say only 1.00 am. Nita was so pumped up that she started beating everybody with pillows. 0ops I forgot to mention Achyut Joshi, the kid of the meet.(Janaab aapko hum kaise bhool sakte hain). Achyut's parents must be given credit for
instilling roots of Indian Music into him.I was Amazed when I came to
know that Sanjeev Ramabhadran was born and brought up in US.

A big discussion started on the pronunciation of Devanagiri Script(Does this ring any bells).I felt as is I was meeting people that I knew since ages and we were chatting well into the wee hours of the morning. Ashok, Satish,Chetan,Surajit were giving final touches to the casettes that were to be given to us.This time it was a compilation of rare songs of Mannadey.I was pretty tired and tried to
sleep. But I managed to lie down reflecting on the the people and trying to Juxtapose them in real and virtual(on the net) world.I was waiting for the next morning thinking of the excitement that was in store ...
