Bees Saal Baad - RMIM meets conquer newer frontiers

The 2014 meet as it unfolded, augurs to be a watershed moment in history of RMIM meets. Here's a look back into the magical and mystical journey capturing some of those moments.
There were the US meets that began in 1994 and the Indian version followed in 2006. While a few friends have been part of both the events, the distances and logistics never made it possible for both the sets to meet. This dream of a grand meet finally turned into reality thanks to telepresence.20 years into our meet history, a new chapter has unfolded. On a personal note it perhaps shredded the biggest challenge that was presented to me in terms of chronicling "An imaginary account of what would transpire if RMIMers from across the oceans came face to face".

The hangout concept sent out ripples and by Friday evening (PST), there was a buzz around the event. As Vijay Kumar (Pragyapati) started posting updates, pictures and a video of the proceedins, the million dollar question on everyone’s mind was “When would the hangout begin?”. Meanwhile, I opened a hangout with the remote attendees and Sudarshana wittily termed it as (g)Anti-meet hangout.

Eventually I called Balaji to find out the hangout times. And that call turned to be a hangout in itself as I was put on speaker phone and everyone took turns to speak. All sorts of questions popped up and here are a few.
    "Was Rajinder Krishan a Sardar"?
"Which part of the world do you live in"?
"That was the first company I ever worked for".
"Can we have an RMIM meet in Delhi"?
"Do they do home delivery in India"?
"How many songs have Gulzar and SD Burman have collaborated on"?
"You are visiting all of my addas in Delhi".
It is left to the readers imagination to match the statements / questions with the people; Ashok, Balaji, Malini, Guri, Vish, Pradeep, Deepak and Vijay.

The hangout times were tentatively fixed as 12 noon and 7 Pm PST on Saturday. I absolutely had no idea that once the hangout began it would stay that way. Perhaps it was dictated by the number of remote participants. The noon hangout was initially joined by Neha, Sudarshana and yours truly. We could only hear Sudarshana and only see Neha. Sudarshana was able to fix the problem later by swapping his laptop and Neha who joined while driving had to deal with echo and had to be muted. She had to reach home and connect through another device.
Meanwhile Pavan joined and on Guri’s request sang the lesser known verison of “raahi tu mat ruk jaana” that goes “hote hain mausam ke phere” followed by “ruk jaana nahiin tuu kahiin haar ke”. Gajendra, Kalyan and UVR soon joined. As soon as Gajendra joined, pat came the question “Is Rajinder Krishan a sardaar ?”. The theory from Guri was that since he was from Duggal family and a Khatri, he was likely to be a sardaar. Vish added “His son was named Bobby” which increased the likelihood.

Gajendra did a quiz by playing a song from the 40’s and the audience was asked to guess the singer. We then figured out that since Gajendra was playing from the same device as the hangout, the song was getting muted. So he had to play the song from another device and the audience had to guess the singers. “main to lehanga nahiin pehanungi”, “vo nazron men samaate jaa rahe hain” and “dil pehluu men uchaltaa jaaye, samajh nahiin aaye haay kya”. The audience were not able to guess and the answers are Zeenat and SD Batish; GM Durrani and Jyoti. By now it was already 1 am IST and India folks said good night.

I rejoined at 5:30 am IST and noticed that Archana Gupta, Ketan and Shalini, Neha, Vandana Vidwans are on the hangout. Apart from the gang of 8 RMIM regulars who came on Friday, there were a few locals; Murali, Raksha, Mani. Balaji’s mother was also present.
A few events including Neha’s chitrahaar quiz and introductions finished by this time. The introductions should also include the first song liked by the audience they can recall. UVR’s pick was “chaudavi ka chand ho”, Balaji recalled “tum gar saath dene ka vaada karo”, to name a few. While a wide set of replies came from the audience, there were a lot of Talat songs and some popular Salil Chowdhury numbers among the picks. Someone fill in regarding the details of Neha’s quiz.

By the time I joined, Vijay Kumar‘s (ISB Wallah) quiz was about to end. Google docs, talk of team work and scrambling at the left over task make me feel like I was at work till I noticed a message on the hangout by Kalyan , “Hema the kiddo is here”. For a minute, I got transported into the past. We all have added a bit of grey hair, a few ounces of flesh and a little bit of pragmatism that we cannot do night-outs any more but even after all these years we probably are the same from inside.

Coming back to the quiz, it’s a sequence of songs for which the music director, lyricist and singer information is provided. The song and the movie have to be guessed. The relation between successive songs is that a word from the mukhda of the first song is the movie of the second song. The members attending in person were split into 2 teams and the hangout folks formed the third team. By the time I joined there were only 3 clues that were still to be answered. Hafiz Khan, Shevan Rizvi and Talat combo caught my attention and I immediately thought of “zindagi ke dhadkan pe gaa” and UVR corrected it to “dil ki dhadkan ke gaa”..Although the song did match with Hafiz, Shevan and Talat, we cudn’t fit it with the predecessor. The clues for that were K-A, Qamar and Lata which had to be matched with its own predecessor; with Hansraj Behl, Prem Dhawan and Rafi-Shamshad being the anchors. This Hansraj Behl number was guessed as “bheega bheega pyar ka samaa” which supposedly had the word Chhalia although folks said it was Baliya. There was a lot of debate after our “answers” were turned over but it didn’t matter since the “remote folks” cracked all the other questions to emerge winners.

A singing session followed with Barun Saha on Guitar. Barun sang several popular Kishore and Rafi numbers including “musafir yuun yaaron” and “suhani raat dhal chuki”. Hema commented that some of the Rafi’s songs being sung are in the “kuchh kuchh hota hai” category for her.
The next event was Guri's video quiz that he had done back in 2011 in Bangalore. This had song clips and their corresponding audio’s mismatched. You have to identify the songs in the order of the video clips. Again the remote attendees formed one group. While we were able to crack most of the songs, 2 numbers featuring Dilip Kumar eluded us. Based on “ call to join Indian army poster” we identified the first Dilip kumar number to be from Arzoo and after much back and forth nailed it to be “kahan tak ham uThaayen Gam”. The next one had Dilip Kumar in a coat sitting in a chair and a heroine doing a “face palm”. We all agreed that heroine was “Nalini Jaywant” and the movie must be Anokha Pyaar. The song aluded us and we guessed it as “jeevan sapna TuuT gaya” although “yaad rakhna chaand taro” was the right one. Vish’s team got all the songs correct.

It was getting late for East Coasters and Hema, Ketan and Shalini signed off. But India folks started joined in ensuring that there were enough remote participants in all the events. Nishant joined briefly from Ahmedabad and left for his Sarangi class. Pavan also made a short entry. Kalyan’s appearance or rather lack was quite amusing.. We could see Kalyan’s son playing, Kalyan’s wife calling their son, and even Kalyan’s maid sweeping but no Kalyan expect for partial glimpses of his eyes, ears and earphones hanging out of them “naam gum jaayega, chehra ye badal jaayega, meri *harkat* hi meri pehchaan hai” ! Gajendra also soon joined and it was now time for discussion on commemorative.

    Commemorative:
Guri and Vish were in their usual form especially during the analysis on the meet commemorative. Referring to Beher and other technicalities of a Ghazal he went on to add that he initially enjoyed some of those songs in a different way but revisiting the song knowing the finer nuances gave an added dimension. He compared it to a meeting with a old friend and discovering a new aspect of your friends personality that enhances the relationship. Vijay commented that Guri is the new UVR and UVR has to find a new niche. Vish said that there is no commemorative CD this time and the theme is a blog about a blog on Ghazals in films.
After finishing the intro, Vish asked the audience a few questions. Who is the lyricst who wrote the most number of Ghazals. We all took turns to answer, and when Vish turned to Vandana there was no response and he said “she has turned her San Franscisco screen saver and gone somewhere” .My guess was Sahir and UVR said the same. Gajendra said Pandit Indra and Guri interjected “us duniya se niklo”! Surprisingly the correct answer was Shakeel. The guesses for composer who scored most Ghazals also wrong with Anil Biswas, Naushad, Roshan and Mandan Mohan occupying the top slots. I am surprised that no one guessed CR and wonder where he stood. The lyrcist-Md combo had Shakeel-Naushad at the top. Several of us guessed the top combo to be Sahir- Roshan.

The very definition of Ghazal was debated with answers ranging from “conversation with the beloved” to Deepak quoting his friend that all Ghazal Lovers belong to “Heart Break hotel”. Vish asked Gajendra to take the Ghazal research into 30’s and 40’s and when Gajendra pointed out a few singers to start with. Vish reasoned that since the RMIM brain has been tuned to composers since the beginning that would be the best “key word” to start the query with.
Vish mentioned a few songs which are not tuned like Ghazals and added a few like; “tadbiir se bigDi hui”, “hum aap ki aaNkhon men” and went on to add that his favorite in this category is “vo dekhen to unki inayat”. The Ghazal output of SDB and Majrooh was discussed and Guri started reading a list of Ghazals from a compilation and when a CR song came up, paused and said “Written by Rajinder Krishan Sardaar”! While there was no commemorative CD, the fascinating discussion more than made up for it.

It was now time to distribute some goodies and DVD’s of past film fare magazines compiled by Surjit Singh and Shekhar were distributed. It was time for some casual conversations and Vish talked about his Dilraj Kaur moment. It was October 3, 1976 and Vish was in the organizing committee of a musical event at IIT. Vish went on add that he had to ask one of the performers to sing next due to a change in schedule and she introduced herself as Dilraj and sang a lovely number. She later became famous as Dilraj Kaur and Vish says that the only other time he met the singer was in a hotel in Bombay.

Gajendra’s quiz was the next item on the agenda. RPM versions of songs were played and we had to guess the singer. The first song “kisi ne apna banaake mujhko” had several wrong guesses and I correctly picked it as “Madhubala Jhaveri”. This actually reminded me of my own “Jai Santoshi Maa” moment from a meet in the 90’s Vish guessed “kabhi aar kabhi paar” to be by Suman and when Pavan Jha joined we realized that he had several of the songs and didn’t have to listen to the vocals to guess the singer. Aankhon men kya ji by Ambar Kumar and Suman Kalyanpur; Ye raat bheegi bheegi by Bhushan and Geeta; Babuji Dheere Chalna by Sudha Malhotra; Ye hansta hua caravan by Mukesh were some of the other songs played.
Finally it was time for singing session. Vish sang “mujh se pehli si muhabbat” , ‘ aaye kuchh abr” and there were a few background discussions going on. There was some talk aout singing a bhairavi and I could see our very own Sardaar, came into form. I always love Guri’s interjections his singing goes like “chup hai dharti chup hai chand sitaare”…taara rara rarara with humming replacing the actual words . By now the video feed was shutoff but I could imagine some carefree gyrations accompanying the singing.

Finally I said goodbye to everyone round 1 am PST but the hangover of the hangout remained. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think of this meet as a reunion. There hasn’t been one for the last 3 years and it’s been even longer since we had an East Coast meet. But that strong sense of belonging to the group was very much evident as several moments of the past meets in deep freeze became warmer and fresher while a few more bytes got added to the memory bank. Thanks a bunch to Balaji and Malini and the attendees for making the meet and the hangout so enjoyable. It’s now time to put the magical moments in freeze mode and wait till the flood gates open again next year.

Gulmohar Park men Guftaguu - RPM's ke saath Doston ke sang

"kya main jaldi to nahiin pahunch gaya" ?  Dr.Satwik ke ghar ke saamne "maali" ko dekh kar kuchh aisa khayaal aaya. Maine dil ko tasalli di " Ye to Gulmohar park hai, zaahir hai ki yahaan Gul aur Gulshan paalne ke liye maali aur maaldaar rehte hain. Vaise sangeet ki duniya men maaldaar ka kuchh aur hi maltlab hai, aur isi maal ka luTf uThaane ke liye ham sab be-sabri se intezaar kar rahe the. mera ishara hai "78 rpm's" ki taraf.

Andar pahunchte hi Dr.Satwik ne apne khazana ke kuchh anmol nagiine pesh ki. Sab se pehle meri nazar paDi "nanhi kali...hawa dheera aana" record par. dilii ki dhoop men safar karke aaya tha aur "~~ hawaa dheere aana" sun ke aisa mehsoos hua ki Dr.Satwik ke bagiiche se nikli hui baad-e-sabaa mera saara pasiina poonchh liya !
Dr. Satwik ne kahaa ki unke collection men Hindi ke alawa Marathi aur angrezi gaane bhi hai aur sab ye unke Daada ji ki amaanat hai. Marathi natya sangeet ka anand le raha tha, aur mere phone bajne lagi. Record player ki aawaz kam karne ki koshish ki lekin pata chala ki awaaz jyaada kar sakte hain lekin kam nahiin :) Phone Dr. Preeti Rajan ka tha ur vo ghar se nikalne vaale the. Preeti ke pahunchne ke baad hamaare puraane doston ki charcha hui, khaas kar Anup Pandey, jinke ghar men pichla baiThak hua. Main aur Preeti Record Player
se wakif hone ki koshish ki aur dheere dheere, chaabi lagana, sui ko nikaalna, seekh liye.

ThoDi der men Bakshish Singh, Vishnu Marwa, Sundeep Pahwa, Bimal Chadha  bhi tashreef le aaye. Bakshish ji kehne lage  ke vo is ilaake se wakif hain aur Dr.Satwik ke paDosi Sudhir Kapoor se uThna baiThna hota hai. phir pata chala ki Satwik aur Kapoor kaiin saal se ek duusre ko jaante hain lekin mausiqi ka shauq abhi tak ek raaz ban kar reh gaii. baaton baaton men Sudhir Kapoor bhi aaye aur maaluum huaa ki ye vohi Sudhir hai jo Geet
Kosh ko digitise kar rahe hain.

Sharbat ke saath saath sab logon ne saabu daane ke kofte aur Bacarwadi ka mazaa liya. maine ye bataana bhool gaya ki Dr. Satwik parivaar ke sabhi sadasy "doctors hain"; unki dharampatni Varsha ji, unka beTa Ambarish aur unki bahu Ruma. Aise ghar men daawat par jaane ka ek faayda hai ki aap bina hichkichaaye baar baar khaa sakhte hain :)

Agla record tha Vasat Prabhu ka gair flimi rachana "maiya mori main nahiin maakhan khaayo". Dr. Satwik ke records men sirf yahi ek Lata ji ka gaana mujhe mila aur kisi vaje se maine isko Marathi gaana samajh baiThaa. Shaayad ye Marathi Natya sangeet sunne ka prabhaav tha. Iske baad Geeta Dutt ka "kaise koi jiye" bajaaye aur iska aanand lene ke liye maine player ka "peTi" khol diya aur saara ghar Geeta Dutt ki aawaaz se Goonj uTha.
Sandeep ne mujhse kahaa "Kaash aaj yahaan Kalyaan hota".

baiThak puura din ka tha aur rpm records sunne ke alawa, ek charcha ka mudda bhi hamne tay kiya. mudaa tha dakshin bharat ke sangeet karon ki hindi film rachnayen. Maine kuchh gaane lekar aaya jisko Dr.Satwik ke "mac book" par Daalke bajaane ke liye Ambarish ka madad lena paDaa. Khaane ka waqt ho gaya tha ur ham sab dining room men apni apni jagah le li. Pav Bhaji, anaar ke daanon se saja hua dahi-chaawal, maTke men
rabdi, aur sab se khaas "jaamuun ka kulfi" ka hamne mazaa liyaa. Jaamun ka kulfi doston ko khuub pasand aaya aur gaanon ke beech bech men uska zikr hota raha.

Khaane ke baad ek khaas mehmaan, Shri Kanhayya Lal Pandey, tashreef le aaye. Pandey ji, hindi film geeton ke raagon par kaiin saalon se anveshan kar rahe hain. Unhon ne kahiin baiThakon men iske baare men baat kiya, aur unka kitaab bhi chapne vaali hai.Unhon ne ye bhi bataaya ki 1940's men jyaada tak ek raag pe aadhar par gaane banaye jaate hain. Baad  men do aur teen raagon ka istemaal karna shuru hua. aaj ke daur men ke gaanon men bhi raag pakDe jaate hain lekin ye jyada tak iteefaaq hai. Pandey ji ne bataaya ki unhon ne
"munni badnaam hui" jiase gaanon ka bhi vishleshan kiya.

Baaton baaton men Naveen aur Nira Anand bhi baiThak men shaamil ho gaye. Naveen ne apne College dinonke kaiin records leke aaye the. Vo is baat ko lekar bahut Khush the ki kaiin saalon ke baad ye unke behan ke ghar men mil gaye aur bachpan ke dinon ki yaaden taaza ho gaii. Naveen ke records par ham sab ne Gaur famrmaya. Pink Floyd se lekar Ghalib ki Ghazlon ka Khazana apne saath leke aaye. Ye sab LP's ya EP's the kyunki ek record par kaiin gaane the. Dr. Satwik ki rpm's par phir hamne roshni Daale aur Rafi sahab ka ek Gair
Filmi record Bimal ji ki nazar men aai. Vo keh rahe the ki ye bahut naayab record hain aur gaanabhi bahit khuub tha "aawaaz do ham ek hain" jo 1962 bharat-chiin jung ke dauraan kaafi mashuur hua tha. Usi daur ka ek aur gaana "Bas do ya teen bachhe hote hain ghar mein achhe" bhi bajay gaya, jo Parivaar Niyantran ka Prachar ke liye bani gaii thi. Mukesh ka ek gair filmi record "chacha Nehru" bhi hamne bajaaye the. 1930's ke dashak ke gaane bhi sune aur ek record par naam tha "snehaprabha". Ek dilchasp baat nikal kar aai ki us daur
men record par us naam chapa jaata tha jis par gaana filmaaya gayaa tha. Yaane ki "aayega aanewala" par "Kamini" ka naam hai jo Madhubala ka film men naam tha. "Kismat Palat Ke Dekh" ka naayaab nagma "aayi bahaar aayi" bhi sun ne ka mauqa mila.

Dakshin Bharat sangeet kaaron par charcha shuru hui. Maine bataya ki inme jyaada Dakshin men mashoor sangeet kaar the jaise ki S.Rajeshwar Rao, Ramesh Naidu, Vishwanath Ramamoorthy,Adi Narayan Rao. Gemini ke Chandralekha, aur Nishan ke gaane bajaaye aur charcha Pauranik aur Stunt filmon par hui. S.Rajeshwar Rao ko Gemini chhoDne ke baad, E.Sankara Sastry, B.S Kalla aurParthasarathy Gemin Orchestra se juDe hue the. Mangala ka "jhanan jhanan jhanva" ka aanand liya.Sansaar aur Bahut Din Huye ke gaane bhi sune jaise "jiyaa lehra lehraaye" aur "chanda chamke niil gagan men".
Phuulon Ki Sej men paach raagon ka istemaal karke "aa bhi jaa rasiya" banaya. Iske baad maine Ghantasala ki sangeet rachna "kahiin preet se bhara" sunaaya. Aaakhir men "paanch minute aur paanch minute" sune jiska sangeet Viswanath-Ramamoorty ne diya.

Jaate waqt Sudhir Kapoor ke ghar gaye aur Geet Kosh digitisation par baat kiye. Geet Kosh database dekhne ka mauqa bhi milaa. Naveen ne aane waale mehfilon ke mudde par raushni Daali aur kuchh acche sujhaav diye. Vo main yahaan zikr nahiin karuunga taaki nazrin par romaanch bani rahe.bas itna kahuunga ki is parampara ko aage badhaane ke liye dosoton ka josh bulandi par hai.

Madan Mohan - sureele lamhon ka khulaasa

"jo giit main aap ke saamne pesh kar raha huun, vo sab sureele hain, hindustani hain, aur jazbaati hain. main ye samajhta huun ki har fankaar ka jazbaati hona bahut zaruuri hai kyun ki agar usme insaniyat ka jazba nahiin hai to vo sahii fankaar nahiin ho sakta". Madan Mohan sahab ke ye khayaal unki shakshiyat par roshni Daalti hai. mujhe lagta hai ki unke chahne waale bhi aisi mizaaj paaye hain.varnaa itni baariqi se unke mulayam mausiqi ko parakhna mushkil hota. Pichle hafta Anup ke ghar men chand doston ki baiThak jamii.

Anand ke pehle farmaish "dukhiyaare naina" se hi mahaul bahut sanjeeda ho gayi thi aur ham gehri charcha men duub gaye the. Anup ke mehman nawazi ka ek khaas baat hai ki vo chai aur namkeen ke saath chuTkule aur lateefe bhi khilaate hain. Ye hasee mazaak ke kisse hamen sanjeedagi se bahaar nikaala. Puraa din aisa silisila chalta raha aur waqt ka ehsaas nahiin hua. Agla farmaish "hamare baad mehfil men afsaane bayaan hongi" ke baare men Anand ne kahaa "is gaane men itne murkiya hain, gaana ek jagah shuru hoti hai aur kaiin mod lete hue ghuumke phir wapas aa jaati hai". 1950's ke kuchh laajawb giiton ka hamne luTf
uThaya; "preetam meri duniya men", "ham pyaar men jalne waalon ko", "saanvari soorat man bhai re piyaa", "tum chaand ke saath chale aao". "tum chaand ke saath" men "maTke" ka khuub istemaal hua. Subhas ne bataya ki 52-54 ke dauraan is saaz ka jyaada zor tha. Bakshish Singh ji ne kaha ki Shyam Sundar aur Hansraj Behl ke shaili ka asar Madan Mohan par hua. Subhas ne Madan Mohan par Anil da aur C Ramchandra ka prabhaav ke baaren men bhi bataaye. Madan ji ke giiton men raagon ka prayog par Subhas ne kaafi gyaan baanTa. chitrapat sangeet men kaiin nagmen raagon ke buniyaad par bane gaye hain, lekin muqammal taur se us raag ka chalan ko naqal nahiin karte. koi gaana, "darbaari" men hai ya "darbaari
kanada" men hai kehne se behtar ye hai ki vo gaana darbari par aadharik hai.

Geet aur charcha ke saath bhook bhi dauDne lagii. hamne thoDa aaraam faramaya aur Pizza aur Birizza mangaya. Gair-sangeet muddon ko chheDe, duniya aur duniyadaari ki baaten ki. Khaane ke baad sangeet men "Chinese Blocks" ka upayog par baat hui aur "dil unko uTha ke de diya" ki taareef hui. kaiin geeton ka zikr hua jisme is saaz shaamil tha jaise "jaane kyaa tuu ne kahi", "raahi tuu mat ruk jaana". Kucch sangeet premi ye kehte hain ki Madan ji ka sangeet shaili "adalat" ke baad ek karwaT lii aur shayaad pehle jaisi vibhinnata nahiin rahi. Subhas ne kuchh aise shabdon men uska jawab diya "aap saDak se guzar rahe hain aur koii dukaan se ek giit guunj rahii hai. kaafi bhiiD aur shor men bhi aap pehchaan liye ki vo Madan ji ki rachna hai aur vahiin khaDe khaDe us dhun men giraft ho gaye. Madan ji ki sangeet ka ek khaas chhaap "Adalat" ke baad saamne aayi. iska matlab ye nahiin hai ki ek film men saare gaane isii chalan men ho."

Ek do giiton ko chhoD ke abhi tak hamne Lata ji ke gaane sune. Ab baari Asha ji ki thi. "saba se yeh kehdo", "mere piya chheDe jiyaa" se shuru karke ham 60's aur 70's ke Asha ji ke gaane bhi sune. Sundeep Pahwa apne pita ji ka banaya film "Bombay Race Course" ka zikr kiya. Ye Nalini Jaywant ki aakhri film thi aur is men Asha ji ka ek khuubsuurat gaana tha "ye kaun meri zindagi men aa gayaa". Is gaane ke baad
"jaane kya haal ho" (Maa Ka Aanchal) ka hamne mazaa liya. Is nagma ko sun kar mujhe Jaidev ji ki yaad aai aur ham kaiin aise sangeet kaaron ke baare men charcha ki jinke aakhir din nashe ka sahaare men guzre. Subhas ne bataaya ki 70's ke dashak men Madan ji kaafi maayoos the. Unko "recording studios" se "dates" milna mushkil ho gaya thaa kyuun ki kuchh sangeet kaar pehle se hi "book" kar lete the. Kaiin Kalaatmak logon ko asafalta bardaash bhii nahiin hoti hai. Fankaaron ki shakshiyat par bhi charcha hui. Baaton baaton men kaafi waqt biit gaya tha aur ham "bread pakoda" aur "cake" ke saath shaam ka aagaaz kiya. Bakshish ji "cake" laaye the aur iska khaas vajah unke pote ki pehli salgirah thi. Shaam hote hi ham sab baahar sair kiye aur apne apne gharon ki taraf nikal paDe. in chand sureele lamhon ki yaaden hamesha taaza rahega.
"suhana safar" ka agla panne ka intezaar karte hue main aap se vida leta hoon.

dil DhuunDhta hai phir vohii fursat ke raat din ...

Unsung Composers

The build up to this mehfil had more twists and turns than the average fare. We had to change the venue a few days before the event and Sundeep ji graciously came forward to host it.
A day before the event, Anand's concerns about possible metro service disruption due to a perceived dharna turned into a sawal jawab sequence; ranging from "kaise aauun Jamuna ke tiir" to "nadi naare na jaao shyaam". Eventually Anand took my offer of coming from Gurgaon to "Jamuna ke  is paar" (my place in Noida) and then again go to "Jamuna Ke Us Paar (Sundeep's house in Delhi).

Anup also decided to come to my place first although Sundeep's house was closer. It was later revealed that Anup didn't want to risk crossing "Jamuna" on his own. We all met at Sagar Ratna Restuarant and found that Subhas who was going to pick us up was running late. In a change to the original plan, Anup then revealed that he got his car and a driver, who apparently was an expert in crossing the "Jamuna".

We decided to leave and were the first group to reach Sundeep's house  and settled in. Soon Bakshish Singh ji arrived. Bakshish ji had just come back from a trip to Mumbai (were he stayed in Nalin Shah's house)and updated us about his visit. We also discussed about the theme for the event, Unsung composers, which was suggested by Bakshish ji. Bakshish ji got along a set of songs for the theme and noticed on the way that first 3 songs didn't get transferred onto his player. So he called his son and asked him to email the to Sundeep.  Sundeep was caught by surprise as he cudn't recollect sharing his email with Bakshish.  Bakshish then revealed that he got the email from the Calendar that Sundeep distributed and were amazed that Bakshish ji was so Tech Savvy.Soon Bakshish ji pulled out a minature Speaker from his wallet and started setting it up with his player. When I questioned "aap speaker leke ghuumte hain" he said
"jab morcha ko jaana hai, sirf bandook se kaam nahiin chalta. Goli bhi saath men leke aana paDta hai!"

Naveen and Bimal ji then arrived and discussed a little about the recent OPN show that they had organised along with Sandeep. We all warmed up with Chai and Namkeen. Bakshish ji then started the theme with an introduction. He mentioned that there are a few composers who are regarded very high in hindi film music. Master Gulam Haider, who brought the music out of the Rabindra Sangeet and Natya Sangeet influence, and is called "master" in respect of his statue. Hansraj Behl was called 'chhoTe master" and is also well respected.
K.Datta respectfully addressed as Guru ji was the first composer of the theme. We started with "diyaa jalaakar aap bujhaaya" and Bakshish ji pointed out that the Mukhda consists of 3 ragas including "Bilawal".  The next song was also from Badi Maa, "aa intezaar hai tera".  Bakshish ji pointed out that when these songs were composed, several composers were so impressed that they went to K.Datta to congratulate him. These were Ghulam Haider, Hansraj Behl, Naushad and OP Nayyar. We then movd to Daaman and noted how Lata's aalaap ends immediately followed by Rafi's aalaap and vice vera.
We were then joined by Subhas Ghosal.

The next composer on the agenda was Jamal Sen and Bakshish ji started with "sapna ban saajan aaye" from Shokiyan. I then played the song the was also recorded for the same movie but did ntot find a place in the film, "beeta hua ek sawan". We then turned to Daera and enjoyed "devta tum ho mera sahara".

Preeti  Ranjan called to inform that he had a long day and wanted to know how long the mehfil was going to last. I told him that we were still covering the second composer and he could make it even if he had to "cross the jamuna".
I then played "rut jawaan jawaan" and asked people to guess the next composer. The clue was that this composer can be seen playing the Saxophone in the video of "rut jawaan jawaan". The first guess was Manohari and then Bakshish ji got it right as Chic Chocolate."chanda to sitara mila" from Rangili and "aa tasveer banaluun" from Nadaan were the samples chosen. Anand pointed out that there's a Kishore song in Rangili in which he sings in male and female voice  similar to half ticket. Anand also revealed an article which claimed that CR composed some movies under the name of Chic Cholcate to evade taxes. Bimal ji recalled an old picure in which CR and Chic were dressed as Fisherman in Goa.

The famous poet "maqdoom mohiuddin" and the history behind "ek chameli ke mandve tale" was the next topic. My good friend Nishant researched this and I summarized it to everyone. In a Nutshell Maqdoom composed it as a sad poem remembering a former jail mate whose love story had a sad ending. However Iqbal Qureshi composed the song to a happy tune. Anand then farmais'hed the other Iqbal Qureshi number which has the same tune "aaj mausam ki masti men". Bimal ji mentioned that the name Qureshi originated from a very noble tribe of muslims.
We were then treated to Tikki ordered from "Bittu Tikki Wala" which all of us relished and had multiple servings.
We took a little detour during this time and Bimal ji told a little about his family background and thathe was privy to several film parties as he was nephew of actor Shyam. He recalled some of the old Mumbai surroundings where these personalities lived and Anand chimed in saying that some of the roads in the areas have been renamed after them. Bakshish ji played a rare version of the Anarkali song "ai baad-e-sabaa aahista chal" which had lovely Sitar inteludes and our resident Classical expert Subhas suggested a couple of possible artist names and ruled out Rais Khan.
The next composer was Dhaniram, whose name was suggested by Anand.  Anand's research on Asha's early output is documented in youtube and I picked a stunner from this sample "sapne tuut gaye".Soon Preeti arrived and I played a song in praise of his favorite singer Mukesh "hamko india bahut pasand". The next song was "kaaton men rehne waale" also from the same movie Matlabi Duniya. This has several unsung composers including "Jayanti Joshi". Preeti was challenged to guess the year of the recording based on Mukesh's voice quality but he didn't take the bait. I always felt that Mukesh'svoice sounds more like early 50's than early 60's in this song.

I wanted to pick some 70's Kishore songs by unsung composers for Anup and asked for suggestions. Pavan suggesed a few on facebook but I found only one of them to my liking, "Badal kaala koyal kaali" by Pradeep Roy Chowdhury.  Anup immediately noted that the songs quality was much better than the earlier ones.  Prof. Preeti  retorted " as the music quality degraded from 50's to 70's, the recoridng quality improved".
We then had a little of flaming session as to who spoilt the vintage music. Was it OPN with his Ghoda Ghadi, CR  with "shola jo bhake" and other wing songs or "junglee" type shouting songs of SJ. Some of these controversial jibes are better left for private consumption :) Bimal ji and Bakshish ji took turns to explain the story behind Sardul Kwatra lodging an FIR on Mohd Rafi.  Anup and Preeti recalled their meeting with the composer in the US back in the 90’s at an RMIM meet.

We then went back to the 50's with Manohar's Chingari. I played "adi mushkil hai" and Bakshish ji playeda catchy number "ya rabba peri peri ?". Next on the list was Shailesh Mukherjee whose "jal ke dil khaak hua" and "aansuon ki chaanv me" from parichay were lapped up. "maane na maane na" and "chhupa chuppi" from Savera rounded off Shailesh's works.
We were then joined by Asad Kidwai who works for NDTV. There was a brief discussion about Naveen’s Ibadat Foundation which is doing programs on lyricists and Asad mentioned that he had an Urdu book that had valuable information about lyricists. Asad also talked about his blog ‘hamkalaam” .
Anup's farmaish V Balsara was next on the agenda."kab beet gaii jeevan" and "sunaaye haal-e-dil kya" from Madmast were enjoyed and Anup pointed out that  the movie was directed by his uncle.

We had another round of Chai and Namkeen and as Anup was helping with the serving, Sundeep commented "you should post this photo and then people will think before coming to my place" to which Anup said "maine isko apna hi ghar  samajh liya" :)
Mukul Roy was the next composer with "do chamakti aankhon men" by Geeta and Hemant's "hai ye duniya kaun si".We then enjoyed GS KOhli compostion  "tumo piya dil diyaa" and it was pointed out that several songs songs of Shikari were popular. We rounded up the evening with the beautiful Talat-Asha duet composed by SK Pal "mere jeevan men aaya hai kaun".

As we were leaving Bakshish ji inquired if Anup was in LA ealier as he was planning to visit. Anup pointed that he was in Bay Area but Preeti had graduated from UC Irvine in the LA area. Anup tried to correct himself by saying " Preeti actually got his doctorate from Irvine" to which Preeti replied "These days people say my I am attending my Kids's graduation party and you then find out that the kid is 10 years old". I was about to walk out with  Subash and head home, Anup asked "tum mere saath nahiin aa rahe ho. Dhoka de rahe ho" to which Preeti replied "Didn't you just listen to songs of "Matlabi Duniya!". (Naveen) Anand aur Anand (Juvekar) decided to go together which meant that Anand Juvekar. didn't have to cross the "jamuna" during the return trip !
See you all again "Jamuna Ke Paar".
